Paraphilia is attraction that has an atypical subject and is not commonly accepted as the norm.
Although some definitions specify paraphilias as sexual attractions, and more nuanced discussions rarely go further than acknowledging romantic paraphilias, paraphiliac experience is not limited to romantic and sexual attractions, and any tertiary attraction can be paraphiliac if it's abnormal enough.
The opposite of paraphilia is normophilia (socially normative attraction). An attraction can be both paraphiliac and a normophiliac due to variety of reasons:
- it's normalized in one parts of the world and is considered a perversion in other ones (e.g. homosexuality)
- it lies on the border between the commonly accepted and frowned upon (e.g. autobiastophilia: fantasies about being raped are recognized amongst most common ones, yet there's a continuous flow of rhetoric painting them as harmful in themselves or being a symptom of larger societal problems)
- it is considered paraphilic in one category of people and normophilic in the other (e.g. hebephilia is the norm as peer attraction, but a paraphilia as a minor attraction)
- it is considered paraphilic as one major type of attraction but normophilic as an other (e.g. peer gerontophilia in normophilic romantically, pretty much like any other chronophilia, but
